Three Incredible Artists
Jason Isbell. Incredible, and incredible to see him live. The audience – I’d never seen so many white people in Oakland. He is virtuosic on guitar, which you wouldn’t necessarily tell from his recordings. Kudos to Garrett who introduced me in the car one time in Sarasota.
Pat Metheny. He paints sound, splashing buckets. I believe he envisions every single note on his guitar before it comes to life, like a chess grandmaster sees his moves in advance. Leon and I went to see him in San Francisco. He’s 71 but his band was all under-30. He has the energy of someone who’s been rocking hard all his life.
Olivia Rodrigo. Now I have to say it’s strange to like her music because she’s about my age. And I’m not normally so mainstream. However, I think in pop music, sometimes mainstream music is popular for a reason. With Olivia Rodrigo’s music, I feel that she is speaking to something deeper inside the soul. Such depth can only be felt in music, not normal conversation.
